In 2010, we wrote a song called Medical Curiosity. It was a ballad touching on overt racism and its relationship to other domestic abuses in the home in middle class white America. And while our intentions were noble, we used language which can be harmful to some of our listeners who have felt the weight of it in a personal way- a way in which we haven't experienced- their entire lives and in their families generations before that. It's language that has at times been fetishized by white artists in extreme music and otherwise. It's language that's best used for black empowerment, not for white storytelling or abstraction. We're removing the song from circulation.
To those who might cry "free speech" and "censorship", first of all- get over your entitlement complex. But also: let it be known that no one has forced our hand here- and if you like the song, that's OK. I like it too. I trust that you can find a way to hear it. But the world at large doesn't need to hear this language utilizing our voice. As our understanding of language keeps evolving, I hope we can continue to encourage each other to reflect on how our use of language affects one-another; not just on a personal level, but systematically as well.
